December saw a shakeup for Online Program Managers (OPMs) with the shuttering of a major player in the university bootcamp space. The Dole Act (which includes funding for VET TEC) cleared the Senate, so there’s hope that VET TEC funding will again be available in 2025. Get the latest insights on making a career change now from an AWS expert and four recent bootcamp graduates, plus learn about the 6 bootcamps we added to the Course Report directory. And don’t miss our End of Year podcast episode to take a look at all of the biggest bootcamp news from 2024!

Course Report · 2024: The Year in Review for Coding Bootcamp News

Curious about what happened in November? Check out last month’s post to listen to our November coding bootcamp news roundup.

A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE OPM SPACE

  • edX, one of the largest OPMs, shuttered its university boot camps in order to shift focus to micro-credential courses.

  • With 2U/edX bowing out from the university bootcamp space, there are still many OPMs (such as QuickStart, Ziplines Education, Springboard, and ThriveDX) that could fill that gap.

FUNDING TECH TRAINING FOR U.S. VETERANS

  • The Senate passed the Dole Act — This means that VET TEC will most likely be revived in 2025, which is great news for veterans and coding bootcamps!

UPS & DOWNS OF RESKILLING

  • The U.S. Department of Labor withdrew its proposal to update the registered apprenticeship system. Republicans may be open to expanding apprenticeships in 2025.

  • The Observer spoke with Amazon Web Services’ Jenni Troutman about the free AWS training that is training over two million people with A.I. skills by 2025. Jenni shared her insights into what it takes to start a tech career now.

  • Course Report hosted a Live Q&A with four panelists who made a career change into tech by enrolling in a part-time bootcamp. These panelists attended Springboard, General Assembly, Tech Elevator, and Careerist, and they shared so many insights into what it truly takes to start a new tech career in software engineering, cybersecurity and QA testing.

3 NEW BOOTCAMP OPPORTUNITIES

  • Interview Kickstart, which has primarily been a technical interview preparation program, now offers a Machine Learning Course.

  • Quickstart has partnered with Santa Monica College to offer a new cybersecurity bootcamp.

  • In the UK, the University of Wolverhampton is opening a coding & AI bootcamp in 2025 to help local upskill into tech careers.
