This October, we saw new reports on how AI skills and apprenticeships affect hireability. We’re diving into AI skill adoption at coding bootcamps and how bootcamps could be poised to respond to the new AI skills gender gap. $22M IN CODING BOOTCAMP FUNDRAISES

  • The non-profit bootcamp Per Scholas was granted a $20M investment from MacKenzie Scott this October.
  • InnovateUS announced it has secured $2 million in funding from Google.org and access to Google Career Certificates to support its mission to upskill and educate public sector professionals free-of-charge over the next three years.

TECH TRAINING APPRENTICESHIPS

  • According to a new analysis by Multiverse and Burning Glass Institute, more than 36 million Americans are stuck in low-paying, high-churn jobs, the vast majority of which are at high risk of automation. 
  • OK Coders in Oklahoma has recently received grants from the Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City to grant tuition scholarships.
  • CIO Dive reports that AWS is launching a new training institute to help career changers and tech newbies land entry-level cloud technologist roles. 
  • Walmart announced that it’s dropping college degree requirements for some corporate jobs. 

AI SKILLS & HIREABILITY

  • Business Insider highlighted a new report from Oxford Internet Institute and the University of Copenhagen that found employees with artificial intelligence skills are paid 21% more on average, and certain AI skills could bump up pay by 40%.
  • The Squamish Chief spoke with Jeremy Shaki, the CEO of Lighthouse Labs about how coding bootcamps in Canada are responding to this new demand for AI skills. 
  • According to the India Times, the demand for bootcamps like Great Learning, Upgrad, and Coding Ninjas is on the rise in India, especially with young engineering graduates looking to improve their employability. 

BRIDGING THE TECH GAP

  • A report from Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise estimates that 21% more women’s careers are exposed to AI automation than men, even though men outnumber women in the workforce.
  • Janna Salokangas, CEO of Mission Impact Academy, wrote a guest post in BuiltIn about the need to recognize how AI could affect women’s careers and the importance of creating upskill programs for women.
  • Technical.ly highlighted a recent Represent Tech scholarship recipient, Zawadi Kirksey-Lamb, who enrolled at Tech Elevator to make a career change this year. 
  • In Inside Higher Ed, Ashley Mowreader explored Native American and Indigenous representation in tech. Specifically, she points out that in 2020, only 2% of coding bootcamp alumni were Indigenous, and ~2% of all technical apprenticeships offered in 2023 were held by AI/AN or NH/PI learners.

NEW CODING BOOTCAMPS & COURSES

  • The tuition-free French bootcamp, 42, has opened a campus in Abu Dhabi.
  • Codeup unveiled its new campus in San Antonio’s North Side.
  • OdinSchool announced a new performance marketing bootcamp.
  • Udemy and Docker announced a partnership, which will give developers in the Docker community access to upskilling training through Udemy. 
  • edX and Verizon have partnered to offer self-paced courses through the Verizon Skill Forward program. 
  • Holyrood reports that UK-based Northcoders is now offering online bootcamps aimed at Scottish coders looking to make a career change. 
  • According to Business News Wales, Coleg Gwent has launched a free, virtual coding bootcamp for unemployed adults across Wales, in partnership with Code Institute
